O's game blog: O's and Yankees wrap up the series and the road trip
Despite 9-0 loss Saturday, O's can have a winning road trip
The Orioles (33-43) and Yankees (44-32) wrap up their three-game series with today’s game at Yankee Stadium to decide the three-game set. Baltimore won 5-3 Friday before being one-hit in Saturday’s 9-0 loss.
It’s been a strange road trip with a mix of impressive wins and losses by large margins. The O’s losses at Tampa and New York have come via six, four and nine runs.
So the O’s are 1-1 this series, 3-3 this road trip and 17-24 for the year on the road. But they are 9-5 their last 14 road games.
The Birds are 3-2 this season versus the Yankees and 18-13 since 2023. A win today would make the Orioles 7-1-1 in their past nine series against New York.
The pitchers
On the mound today, it’s righty Dean Kremer (6-7, 4.80 ERA) against righty Will Warren (4-4, 4.83 ERA).
Kremer allowed just one run over five innings on Tuesday at Tampa. In three starts versus AL East teams this year, but none against New York, he is 3-0 with a 3.45 ERA. In 12 career starts against the Yankees, he is 4-3 with a 4.40 ERA. And in four career starts at Yankee Stadium, Kremer is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA.
While Warren has allowed just three runs in 11 2/3 his past two starts for an ERA of 2.31, he has yielded 14 in 18 1/3 over his last four games, with an ERA of 6.87 in that span.
A few final O’s notes
Despite Saturday’s loss, the O’s have won two of the last three, six of nine, 14 of 21 and 17 of their past 26 games. They are 12-7 this month.
The Orioles are hitting better with runners in scoring position this road trip, batting .378 (14-for-37). In the three wins only, they are 11-for-27 (.407) with RISP.
The O’s 11-game streak with at least one homer ended yesterday. They hit 18 home runs in the 11 games. This was the longest current streak in the majors and the club’s longest since 16 in a row with a homer from Aug. 4-21, 2024.
The O’s were held to one hit yesterday. It was the second time this year they were held to a single hit, the other being April 22 at Washington. The Birds were shutout for the seventh time. Last year’s club was shutout eight times all season.
That one sucked. A road trip of big emotions each way ends 3-4. They have little margin for error and that would have been big to get. They could not get it. Too many chances missed on offense today. On to the homestand.
Welp, now behind. Needed a perfect relay to the plate there and didn't get it.
